The Mellow Monk Green Tea Starter Kit

Mellow Monk introduces its new "Green Tea Starter Kit," a great gift idea for the holidays (or anytime). The Starter Kit consists of one packet of "Top Leaf" green tea, one packet of "Monk's Choice" green tea, and one packet (free!) of imported Japanese tea filters. These tea filters, available only with the Starter Kit, eliminate the need for strainers, tea balls, and even tea pots. Just fill one with green tea, close it, and drop it in a cup of hot water, as you would any tea bag.

Introducing "Top Leaf" tea!

Mellow Monk has added a new tea to its lineup: "Top Leaf" tamaryokucha green tea. "Top Leaf" tea is also from the Nagata family, who provide our other green tea offering, now called "Monk's Choice." "Top Leaf" is the Nagatas' most premium tea. It's from a separate part of the farm, and the tea plants there get a lot of extra T.L.C. during the growing season, including extra fertilizer (organic, of course). At harvest time, the Nagatas pick only the tenderest uppermost leaves, hence the name "Top Leaf." We're sure you'll taste the difference! Of course, the extra T.L.C. that "Top Leaf" tea gets means a higher price, but it's OK to treat yourself once in a while!

Green tea with honey

Many customers have written in to say they enjoy green tea with just a little bit of honey. There are many other things you can add to your green tea to spice it up—cinnamon, vanilla, even organge peel. If you have a special combination of goodies that you like to add to your green tea as a change of pace, please drop us a line and let us know.

U.S. government (NCI) study on tea and cancer prevention

The National Cancer Institute, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, has on its website a Fact Sheet about tea and cancer prevention. It states, among other things, that "studies have shown tea catechins act as powerful inhibitors of cancer growth in several ways" and that "green tea contains higher levels of antioxidants [catechins] than black tea."

Many of the studies mentioned are still ongoing, and in a sense, scientific research into the reasons for the benefits of green tea have only just begun. But there is plenty of evidence out there, so we may as well get a head start on everyone else. And because Mellow Monk buys its teas from certified ecologically friendly farms in Japan, it's even healthier than teas from giant corporate farms that use all sorts of pesticides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers and whatnot--not only to improve yields, but also because such large, corporate tea farms are located where labor is cheap and tax laws are advantageous--in other words, in places where the climate and soil conditions are not naturally conducive to growing wholesome green tea.
